This latter mode only compensates for vertical motion while you're holding the camera in "landscape" orientation; turn it vertical, and the IS 2 mode won't work. As you'd expect, the E-510 retains Olympus' unique Supersonic Wave Filter, which couples a high-frequency vibration of the imager to remove dust from its surface, plus a range of seals to stop movement of dust through the camera body. (The Canon Rebel XTi comes with the software for this trick.). Then it articulates pretty much like we've seen on most Canon-style swivel-screens. But the fact that the Olympus 770 SW is water/freeze/crush/shock-proof makes it stand out from the rest.

Two prior SLRs that display a live preview are the Canon 20Da, built specifically for astronomy, and the Fujifilm S3 Pro; but both of these can only show a live preview for seconds, and then only in monochrome mode. Aimed squarely at the Nikon D300 and Canon 40D, it's no surprise that the Olympus E-3 is big and teeming with buttons and controls. Then I remembered Live View. Olympus E-3 vs Canon EOS 40D. The noise of the multiple shutter sounds might wake him up, but not in this case.

You can still preview the exposure, white balance, and depth-of-field accurately on the screen, a major benefit to Live View, and there's a new Shadow Adjustment Technology that helps you assure that you'll maintain detail in the shadows. The Olympus E-510 uses a fixed eye-level pentamirror with a 95% field of view. The power button is tiny and lies mostly recessed into to the top edge of the camera. If you press the OK button when out of the zoom mode, a modified translucent Status display comes up allowing you to change major settings on the fly. The Olympus E-330's LCD is big, very much dominating the back of the camera, but all controls are still where they ought to be. I was sure I'd prefer the E-410 for its small size, but the E-510 won me over with its greater utility and image stabilization. Olympus FE-230.

But the view is dim due to the partially silvered mirrors. Dave had to focus on the background and shoot at f/8 to keep it all in focus, and still the images were soft (we've noticed overall softness in most images, but it responds well to unsharp masking). Though this wasn't the last SLR with a live preview to hit the scene in 2006, it was the first on the market; and those that did follow were really just modifications of this very design.35 mm - 106 mm (3x) zoom lens. Live View. If you're the gadgety type who needs a hybrid digital camera, the E-330 is that camera. The sensor is the same shot to shot, so any dust that sticks to the glass just sits there, affecting each frame the same as the last.

USB full speed connection. Most of the chief benefits of an SLR are found in the optical viewfinder: You're seeing exactly what the lens sees, and what the sensor will see once you press the shutter.

• Since it's a Four-Thirds camera, the E-410 is compatible with all 28 Four-Thirds lenses made by Olympus, Sigma, and Panasonic.

• Using the AF assist, which consists of pulsing the pop-up flash, I had better success focusing, but it took a lot longer, with several bursts of illuminating flash that's pretty annoying to those around, especially the subjects.
• Add flash to Live View, and the full AF shutter lag actually gets slower than the Panasonic L1.

10.4 million sensor photo detectors. Found this little dragonfly to be unusually cooperative, flying back to this favorite flower over and over so I could make use of the 150mm f/2.0.

36 mm - 180 mm (5x) zoom lens. The Olympus E-3's LCD looks rather military-grade, but feels a little lighter than I expected. Interchangeable lens mount accommodates Olympus Zuiko four thirds Digital lenses. High ISO images are also pretty good, with admirable control over noise, especially considering the smaller size of the Four-Thirds sensor.

• There's Continual Focus (the camera is always finding focus, not just when you half press the Shutter button).
• All 11 AF points appear in the Olympus E-3's Live View mode, and light up very similar to how they do in the optical viewfinder, except that the whole dot illuminates.

First Shots. The viewfinder on the E-330 is just too dim to give you the full benefit, and the other two modes are also compromises. There's Continual Focus (the camera is always finding focus, not just when you half press the Shutter button). With Studio 2.0, you can remote control the camera and instantly upload pictures from the camera to the computer. Olympus E-300. Olympus C-50 Zoom.Given that the E-510's Large/Fine JPEGs can be as large as 8MB each, you'll want one or two large CF cards for vacation. It's fine for telephoto shots, if a little underpowered. Its design, though big, is ergonomically pleasing and handsome, and it gives you a feel of confidence and control.

Main Forums. Pre-Capture technology records the five frames in the buffer prior to shutter release. Late afternoon/early evening shots were a little more difficult, however. I'm happy to report that the Olympus E-510 had less trouble with shadows than the E-410, though its tone curve is still less than adequate at keeping detail in highlights and shadows. Unless you're in Live View mode, the Status display is present for about ten seconds after you release the shutter button. The Olympus SP-550 offers a VGA movie mode (with QVGA also available), capturing clips at 640 x 480 pixels at up to 30 frames-per-second in AVI format (Motion JPEG) with sound, for as long as the xD-Picture card, or internal memory has space.

Together the two lenses span 10.7x. The Olympus E-410's ISO 1,600 performance was pretty good, producing somewhat soft images, but with little noise.

Sometimes even without the hood the lens throws a shadow. Olympus D-300L. Olympus C-3000 Zoom. Yet, the Olympus 770SW is small enough to be extremely portable. In Program mode, there's nothing.

• But not seeing the shutter speed prior to depressing the shutter fully is one of my pet peeves and I was disappointed that this information was missing from the LCD in Record mode.

Black and white and sepia effects are also available in playback mode along with resizing, the option to tag and organize images as favorites, and the ability to retrieve images by the date they were shot via a calendar. Because the optical viewfinder bezel had to be extended to clear the LCD, you can't just tilt the LCD up, you have to first tilt it down (or pull it out slightly as above), then it will swing up 90 degrees for those waist- or ground-level shots.

Indoor images shot with Auto White Balance are warm to the point of appearing sepia. Small and light, easy to bring along. One thing digicam owners quickly grow to dislike more than small, cramped optical viewfinders is extreme shutter lag. Canon Digital Rebel XT.
