E-510 Overview. As the market for digital SLRs gets more crowded, we can expect more and more attempts at product differentiation. They'd have had to move the four buttons on the screen's left to accomplish this on the Olympus E-330, but I think it would have been worth it for the greater versatility considering all the trouble to achieve a mere 45 degrees down and 90 degrees up, for 135 degrees of arc. Other EVOLT E-510 features include a 49-segment iESP metering system, plus center-weighted average, spot, and two further spot metering modes called "Highlight Spot" and "Shadow Spot". The sensor is the same shot to shot, so any dust that sticks to the glass just sits there, affecting each frame the same as the last.But I'm happy to report that it's not as bad as we saw in the E-410, making the images more usable overall.

Also small and light, these two Canons take great shots and also work well in low light. Although there were some constraints, I tried to test the Olympus 770 SW under a variety of conditions to see whether it lived up to its rough-and-tumble claims.Although not as tiny as some I've used on small cameras, it's not very responsive to the touch, and with the large extension of metal that holds the wrist strap, it's sometimes awkward to press the right side of the controller to change the flash mode. The E-510 has a better tone curve than the E-410, though it could still be better. Read user reviews (41). Though it has the great lens and full-auto modes, it too often fails to serve up accurate exposure and white balance indoors where consumers take a good portion of their pictures.

Billed as a pure pro camera, the Olympus E-3 is really more comparable to the cameras by Olympus's competitors that we've been categorizing as semi-pro, such as the Pentax K10D, Canon 40D, and Nikon D200. Built on a magnesium alloy frame the Olympus E-3 feels solid, and is sealed against dust and splashes. The preflash is a lot faster, but somehow the E-510 manages to be slower overall. Behind it in this series of shots is the Pandigital photo frame showing off images taken with the camera directly from its xD card.The launch in 2004 of the second 4/3 SLR, the E-300, was less popular, which is odd because the compact 8MP SLR was a very good and competitively priced camera. At wide angle, the flash doesn't even come close to covering most of the 14mm frame area. But with zoom I managed to get a few good shots that I later cropped.

Tendency to underexpose images indoors, requiring +1.3 EV compensation. The Olympus E-510 is a good quality SLR with great controls and the added advantages of image stabilization and Live View. The Olympus E-3's viewfinder status display runs along the bottom, not off to the right as on the E-410 and E-510. The Olympus Stylus 790 SW ships from September, priced at about US$300. Those who will spend enough to buy an SLR with a Live View LCD will probably default to the LCD, and they'll never know the value of real-time image framing with a big, bright viewfinder. Whereas the Canon XTi on top left much chroma noise to preserve detail, and the D40 effectively smooshed out chroma noise along with some detail, the E410 strikes a balance between the two extremes.You'll never get all of it out, and your camera will never be the same.

Read user reviews (23). The Olympus E-3 is by far the most advanced Olympus digital camera I've used, very satisfying to shoot with, and one of the more compelling SLRs launched this season. It remains to be seen just how well these two systems will work together in the SP-550 UZ, but I applaud Olympus for finally including hardware-based image stabilization. The Olympus 790 is also waterproof to a depth of three meters.

At wide angle, the flash doesn't even come close to covering most of the 14mm frame area. The image returned as a series of three to five stills appearing over half a second, showing the child further along in his journey. 400 shots. Keep it in perspective, and the E-410 is a little more versatile than most digital SLRs because it offers both. Olympus never produced an autofocus SLR system with interchangeable lenses, which is why it was easy for them to let go of the manual-focus OM-series and build an entirely new system designed around a smaller sensor, which they dubbed Four-Thirds (you can find out more about the Four-Thirds system at www.four-thirds.org.) Unlike other manufacturers, all with an existing base of AF lenses to support with their new digital SLR designs, Olympus could afford to start fresh.

Pro Lenses. When the Olympus E-500 came out in the Fall, I thought they'd abandoned the E-300 in favor of more conventional design. Thanks to the LCD I was able to sit back and frame shots with the camera comfortably out front. LCDs already introduce more lag to the shutter-lag factor, but when they get jerky, presenting still after still that you'll never see again, they're frustrating. 18x zoom (28-504mm 35mm equivalent) with 14 elements in 11 groups, 4 aspherical lenses, 2 ED lenses.It was a little too big to slip into a small shirt pocket but it tucked away nicely into a daypack and was fairly comfortable around the neck hanging from a lanyard.

The Olympus FE-210 marks the entry-point of the group, combining a seven megapixel CCD imager, Olympus-branded 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5" LCD display in a compact body with power from two AA batteries. Hot spots appear at high ISO at very specific exposure times (not good for those doing night photography and certainly not astronomy!).On the front of the Olympus E-330, they returned to a small, distant lens release button, instead of the nice big button that's nestled right against the lens on the E-500. Having to cycle through the mode button to switch from standard Record to Digital image stabilization mode, and then having to push the button again to reach the Scene mode menu is something most people can get used to, but the multiple button pushes, as well as the separate menus, added a little extra frustration to camera navigation. • Browse our Pro image. The pixel count is a little lower, at 7.5 megapixels, but it can indeed clock out a live image from the sensor, with no effective limit on the duration of the live display. Ultimately, the E-330 has three ways to frame your images, and each is a compromise big enough that I'd hesitate to recommend a camera with any one of these viewfinders, let alone all three. They've grown accustomed to holding their cameras out in front of them and composing on the LCD. Image stabilization works well, helps indoors. Even those who are less than enthusiastic about the great outdoors will appreciate not having to worry about dropping the camera, and can rest easy if they accidentally sit down while the Olympus 770 SW is stowed in a back pocket.You can move the camera to a more contrasty subject, but you won't be able to see just where you've moved it until the camera focuses and your live view returns. Because of the natural shape of a pentaprism or Penta-mirror, you'll find a similar shape under the Rebel XTi's flash; but I'll take Olympus's word that they did this on purpose. The last viewing mode is the "B" mode, which draws an image directly from the sensor.

The Olympus 790 is also waterproof to a depth of three meters. Olympus C-3000 Zoom. The Olympus SP-550 UZ's LCD was showing blown highlights that weren't there. The image is softer overall, however. The 790 SW also includes a four mode internal flash, and offers beginner-friendly control over images courtesy of a rather generous 23 scene modes.Olympus FE-115.

Another major highlight to the Olympus E-3 is the articulating LCD on the camera back, which makes Live View mode so much more valuable. • Exploits the image sensor’s capabilities to the maximum. We had a little trouble with the camera's image quality when zoomed in close on a computer monitor, but few shooters actually use resolution this high, even printing up to 8x10 size, and few of these defects are strongly visible at those resolutions.Olympus C-3000 Zoom. Viewfinder blackout is brief enough that you can stay on your subject. True manual focus offers both visual and tactile feedback. The Olympus E-3's grip is very comfortable, shaped a little differently from the E-510, a little less aggressive on the forward curve, which gives the middle finger a more confident grip overall. 2005's EVOLT E-300 was quite a departure in SLR design, with a porromirror arranged on the side of the camera instead of a pentaprism mounted on top, and an onboard flash that could be used as fill in conjunction with a hot-shoe-mounted flash.

Learn where and when it works, and take several backup shots, and you'll get pretty good results; certainly better than you would without it. 10.0-megapixel Live MOS image sensor. But the monitor exhibited very little grain under low light. No second Command dial for quick adjustment of both aperture and shutter speed in Manual mode.

• No lens is perfect and optical distortions are easily accommodated by our "intelligent" vision.
• Outdoor enthusiasts may well be able to overlook some of its performance and image quality shortcomings, as well as its basic feature set, knowing that the Olympus Stylus 770 SW can handle whatever physical challenges are thrown its way.
• 36 mm - 100 mm (2.7x) zoom lens.
• The E-510's detail here is a bit softer than the E-410, which also may be due to the E-510's tendency to front-focus -- at least our sample.
• 3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to a 38-114mm lens on a 35mm camera).
