If there's one thing digicam owners quickly grow to dislike more than small, cramped optical viewfinders is extreme shutter lag. Good Prefocus shutter lag. In the E-410 review I mentioned a problem I had with shots from the camera having strangely underexposed mids, with blown highlights. While their basic specs are quite similar, the E-510 really is a different camera from its smaller, lighter brother, the E-410. I don't say it's impossible to remember to close the eyepiece shutter, nor do I judge it as bad; I just don't think the E-330 is for the point & shoot photographer wanting to take snaps of the kids. With Live View, people will expect the E-510 to work just like their digicam; and further, because it's an SLR they will also expect it to have lower shutter lag than their digicam. But I'm happy to report that it's not as bad as we saw in the E-410, making the images more usable overall. There's also USB 2.0 High-Speed computer connectivity, and NTSC / PAL video out to let you see your photos on a television. You'd think you'd get that greater speed with this spiffy hybrid Olympus E-330 SLR, but I think most users will be so overwhelmed by the viewfinder choices that they'll only use one.

Two new Olympus lenses were introduced with the line, and the E-410 can be purchased with one or both lenses in a kit. Whereas the Canon XTi on top left much chroma noise to preserve detail, and the D40 effectively smooshed out chroma noise along with some detail, the E410 strikes a balance between the two extremes. The Olympus E-330 is utilitarian, not beautiful. Smart control design. The Olympus E-510's image stabilization seems to work pretty well. I prefer grip-mounted shutter buttons, but once my hand has found a comfortable grip on the E-410, my index finger quite naturally rests on the shutter button, so no harm there.

They were incredible handheld computers, and people who see them today -- even those who own the most advanced modern handheld computers -- marvel at the design and interface.
